Ed was one of 11,276 babies born in Lincoln County Memorial Hospital and has lived his entire life in Troy. He attended Sacred Heart School when it was a four-room schoolhouse, where the current Stefanina’s Restaurant is located. He attended Buchanan High, running both track and cross country. Senior year, Ed played basketball under the Missouri Hall of Fame Coach Bob Wilhoit.
Ed attended college at the University of Missouri- Columbia. During his senior year, he scored in the top five percent in the country on the Law School Admission test and was admitted to the University of Missouri Law School. While in law school, Ed interned in the Boone County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office and the Missouri Supreme Court.
Ed’s father, Peter J. Grewach, was also an attorney who practiced in Troy for 30 years prior to his death in 1984. He was a partner with William Hungate for 16 years before Bill was elected to Congress. Ed’s father grew up in an orphanage in Belleville, IL and was the first person from the orphanage to ever go to high school. He attended Cathedral, which is now Althoff High in Belleville, IL. Upon graduation, he joined the Navy and served in WWII. He received a degree in engineering from the University of Montana, a Business Degree from St. Mary’s University, and attended St. Louis University Law School. Ed’s mother Lucy was a Spanish teacher at Troy High School. Ed’s brother, Larry, is an Administrative Law Judge for the state of Minnesota and his sister, Tina, lives in Chicago.
Ed and his wife Debbie have been married for 25 years. Debbie has a Bachelor’s Degree in English from the University of Missouri and has been librarian at Sacred Heat School for 17 years. She additionally served 8 years as Lincoln County Public Administrator. Debbie is a cancer survivor. Ed and Debbie have two children. Alex is a System Controller for Center Pointe Energy in Clayton, MO. Hannah is a third generation graduate from the University of Missouri- Columbia and holds a business degree. She is currently working in the Human Resources Department at JES Holdings in Columbia, MO. Ed and Debbie have a grandson, Augustine, who is one year old.
Experience in the Courtroom
After graduating from law school, Ed began work with his father, Peter J. Grewach. He ran for Prosecuting Attorney and won elections for two successive terms and served 8 years in that office. At that time, he was the youngest elected Prosecuting Attorney in the State of Missouri. During his time in office he was responsible for and tried a number of serious felonies, including eight murder cases, rapes, arsons, forgeries, perjuries and drug cases and assaults.
Ed has served as the City Attorney for Troy and attorney for Lincoln County Medical Center for the past 25 years. His practice represents a number of small businesses and a number of clients in estate planning as well as defending cases for insurance companies. Martindale-Hubble, a nationwide organization which rates attorneys has given Ed the “AV” rating- the highest rating given indicating a preeminent legal ability and ethical performance by an attorney.
Ed has extensive trial experience and has tried hundreds of cases including over 100 jury trials. Those include murder cases, wrongful death, election contests, probate, divorce and a wide variety of civil and criminal cases.
Proud Member of the Community
Ed organized the basketball and soccer programs at Sacred Heart School. He was named the Alumni of the Year for Sacred Heart School in 2003. Ed is a lifelong member of Sacred Heart Parish. Ed is a former member of the Parish Council, served as the President of Home and School, and served in a leadership position in the Church’s last four capital campaigns.
Ed is a member of Missouri Right to Life and has, on multiple occasions, marched in the Pro-Life March in Washington, D.C. He is a member of the Troy Rotary Club, Knights of Columbus, Troy Chamber of Commerce, Missouri Association of Hospital Attorneys, the Missouri Municipal Attorneys Association and was a charter member of the Troy Optimists Club.
He began his political career working on Harold Volkmer’s campaign, putting up signs and handing out leaflets. Ed was attracted to Harold’s campaign because the Congressman shared his philosophy- Pro-Life, Pro-Gun and fiscally conservative. He became Chairman of the Volkmer Committee and served in that capacity from 1992 to 1996. Ed was also elected as a delegate for the 1980 Democratic National Convention in New York City.
